Building Art Initiative

The Building Art Initiative responds to a city-wide issue: unprecedented development pressure in Oakland and an affordability crisis — there is an urgent need to preserve and strengthen creative uses and artists in Oakland during this time of urban transformation and economic growth. We match artists with spaces and resources to produce, create, and show work -- deploying the arts and engaging businesses, property owners, workers, residents, and visitors in our accessible, central, infrastructure-rich District. Specific areas of focus will include vacant retail spaces, the Iron Works District, and District Gateways. Dynamic artworks will raise the cultural capital of the neighborhood, attract more visitors and activity, reduce blight, and support the arts. The District seeks property owners, leasing managers, and artists to participate.
