Painting the Town Mosaic: JLID & Oakland Roots Bring Public Art to Jack London
Tag: Features
The last week of August, Jack London will be home to something new, colorful, and community-driven!
Together with the OakDOT's Paint the Town program, Oakland Roots, Oakland Soul, Capitol Corridor, Oakland artist Kalonstah and Wall Management, JLID is bringing a vibrant street mural to the intersection of 2nd & Alice, right in front front Amtrak Plaza.

This collaboration is about more than paint on the street. JLID is proud to stand alongside Oakland Roots and Soul, teams that embody Oakland’s spirit of resilience and togetherness. Sports bring people together across backgrounds, and this mural is a chance to carry that same energy into the public realm through art. With the support of Capitol Corridor, this project highlights how partnerships between community, culture, and transit can help shape a more connected Jack London.
What to Expect: The mural will be painted August 27–29, with touch-ups possibly continuing into the weekend (8/30-8/31). During this time, the intersection will be closed to vehicle traffic and we ask everyone to be especially mindful when moving through the area. Please help us protect the artwork by avoiding driving, biking, or walking across the mural while it cures.

Whether you’d like to volunteer for a shift, stop by to see the mural come to life, or simply snap a photo once it’s finished, this project is for the whole community. Together, we’re creating something beautiful that reflects Oakland’s energy and spirit. We can’t wait to share it with you.
Please Note: Oakland Roots are recruiting volunteers through their season ticket holders, while JLID is recruiting separately for volunteer roles.
